GE2 - Second German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: ca 1855
Title: Douze Etudes || Étude XI
Dedication: Madame la Comtesse d'Agoult

While performing a new typesetting of the Etudes, Op. 25, the Breitkopf & Härtel company introduced numerous changes into the note text, out of which the majority constitutes corrections of errors and inaccuracies of GE1:

  • the  time signature was returned;
  • the majority of oversights and errors mentioned in the characteristics of GE1 were corrected (except for the fingering in bar 26 and slur in bar 46);
  • range of dynamic hairpins were changed, often slightly, e.g., in bars 8 or 16;
  • a reinterpretation of inaccurate slurs of GC was performed, e.g., in bars 9, 12 or 13-16; slurs in analogous bars 25-26 were also completed;
  • notation of accidentals was ordered, by adding a number of cautionary signs, e.g., a  before B1 in bar 37 and c2 in bar 59 or entire groups of signs in bars 39, 50 and 52, as well as by deleting the unnecessary signs, e.g., naturals in bars 5 and 69; at the same time, mistakes were committed – e.g., in bar 16 the necessary  before d1 in the 4th group of semiquavers was deleted (the sign could be considered as superfluous in GE1, in which the 9th semiquaver d1 was written on the bottom stave).
  •  sign was added in bars 30 and 51;
  • the erroneous rhythmic notation in bar 46 (partially) and 80 was corrected;
  •  lowering a2 to a2 in the 1st half of bar 46 and cautionary naturals before the notes in bar 57 were added, most probably erroneously;
  • range of the slur in the L.H. in bar 49 was changed (on the basis of analogy with bar 51);
  • the erroneous octave sign in bar 57 was corrected;
  • wedges in bar 62 at the end of the Etude were added.

In GE2 particular Etudes were also published separately, provided with a collective cover, which itemised 12 etudes each by Chopin, Henselt and Thalberg.
