It was a manuscript (lost), close to GC, yet in many details (e.g., lack of marcato in bar 9, arpeggio in bars 17-18 and 81-82, and, above all, different versions in bars 33, 83 and 89) clearly independent from it, that was the base text for FE1. According to us, it was most probably [A] – an autograph corrected and completed by Chopin.
FE1 was certainly corrected by Chopin, which is confirmed by visible traces of this kind of corrections, which could have been ordered only by the composer, e.g., in this Etude it is the addition of the E1 note in bar 59. Chopin's intervention can also be assumed in the case of, e.g., the fingering in bars 43-44 or pedalling in bars 46, 48 and in the final fragment of the Etude, from bar 83.
FE1 lacks numerous necessary accidentals, which, in the majority of the cases, almost certainly corresponds to the notation of the base text, cf., e.g., bars 46, 48 and 50 (as well as all examples mentioned in the characteristics of GC).
In many places in FE1 there are versions which Chopin then changed in other sources – GC and the base text to EE1, e.g., b1 in the chord in bar 43 or empty octaves in the L.H. in bars 45 and 47. It concerns also the additions of the performance indications, e.g., marcato in bar 9, dim. - - in bars 7-8, 25-26, 33-34.
