First French edition, based on A. The comparison with the autograph, as well as visible traces of corrections reveal a number of more or less probable changes performed in print. Some of them were included in GE1, some not, which indicates the existence of at least two stages of proofreading of FE1 (probably even three – see the Etude in C major, No. 1). Chopin's participation in all stages of proofreading and their broad range is revealed by the preserved correspondence between Schlesinger and Kistner, and their palpable proof is constituted by FEcor (in the Etude in A minor, No. 2). Examples of changes performed at particular stages of proofreading:
- 1. Changes included in GE1 – all corrections of the original versions mentioned in the characteristics of A, additions to the fingering (see bar 1), performance indications (e.g., tempo indications in bar 1 and sostenuto in bar 49) and slurs (bars 47-49), as well as, e.g., changes in bar 20 and at the beginning of bar 50.
- 2. Changes not included in GE1 – e.g., adding a at the end of bar 28, a before d1 in the chord at the beginning of bar 36.
Apart from the above illustrated changes and additions, being undoubtedly a result of Chopin's intervention, in FE1 this kind of differences appears with regard to A, whose qualification as authentic corrections is unclear or even dubious. Above all, it concerns the overlooked and sometimes also changed performance indications, as e.g. accents (see bar 1) or in bars 21 and 32, yet also, e.g., the missed crotchet G1 in bar 26 or omitted ties sustaining E in bars 51-53. We analyse each of this kind of places individually, in order to, on the one hand, respect the possible latest intention of Chopin and, on the other hand, not to deny the performer valuable authentic indications, which could have been omitted by accident.
FE1 is also not free – in spite of a few stages of proofreading – from clear errors, e.g., '4' instead of '3' (fingering) in bar 17 or omitting dots extending crotchets in bars 46 and 48.
