composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

In the main text we give the dots with which Chopin provided all quavers in these bars in FEcor. Ap also includes staccato signs – alternating wedges and dots – yet only over four bass notes in bars 19-21. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Authentic corrections of FE |

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

On the 4th beat of bars 19, 21 and 23 CLI and Ap have thirds in the lower voice of the R.H. Chopin resigned from the lower notes of these thirds already in the base text for FE. Independently from the number of sounds, there are also differences in rhythmic values: Ap has crotchets here – according to the general scheme in bars 19-24. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Accompaniment changes |

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

In Ap the rhythmic values of subsequent two-note chords of the lower voice in the R.H. create in those bars (as well as in subsequent repetitions) an alternating short-long scheme (semiquaver-crotchet). Sometimes the resounding length contrast is additionally underlined with accents. In the main text we give the homogenous, as far as the sound is concerned, version of FE (→GE,EE). The last chords in bars 19, 21 and 23 are discussed separately due to differences in the number of sounds, and in bars 20 and 22 – due to their relation to the accents. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Chopin's hesitations , Accompaniment changes |

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

In none of the authentic sources the notation of the accidentals in the part of the R.H. is entirely correct in these bars – particularly in bar 19. However, the inaccuracies do not pose problems in establishing the correct text. Moreover, in all sources except for Ap the unnecessary before f2, the 14th semiquaver in bar 20, is repeated. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Errors in FE , Accidentals in different octaves , Omissions to cancel alteration , GE revisions , Errors of A , Authentic corrections of FE , Errors of CLI |

In Ap there are four slurs, one in each bar. As it seems that some of the slurs in this manuscript may include fragments (endings) in which the quill pen did not leave a mark on the paper (or perhaps they are imperceptible in the available photographs), their exact range is uncertain. According to us, it cannot be excluded that in Chopin's intention each pair of slurs in bars 19-20 and 21-22 was supposed to merge in one two-bar-long slur. category imprint: Differences between sources |
