Chopin would gradually waive the indication of accents at the beginning of three characteristic four-note motifs in the R.H. Ap has three such accents, while in FEcor Chopin initially wrote the second and third of them. Eventually, he deleted the signs, covering them with the fingering. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations |

In the sources one or both naturals before the a1-c2 third were omitted. Lack of the before a1 (in all sources) is a patent error. What is interesting is the fact that the defect was not corrected in GE and EE4 despite adding a cautionary before a2. In turn, lack of the returning c2 in Ap, although most probably incidental, leads to a version with c2, which, from the harmonic point of view, is not impossible. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Omissions to cancel alteration |

In the main text we give the staccato dots written by Chopin in FEcor. The dots were omitted in FE (→EE) and in GE both octaves were combined with a slur. The authenticity of the latter is unclear – seeing the previous slurs, the reviser of GE could have considered the lack of slur over the last pair of crotchets as an oversight. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Authentic corrections of FE |

In the main text we do not include present in Ap, as it seems to exceed the dynamic framework of this part of the Etude. See bars 15-16. category imprint: Differences between sources |

In the main text we give the length-wise harmonised pair of hairpins written by Chopin in FEcor. In Ap there is a striking imbalance between the half-bar-long hairpins and the sign, which looks like an accent. In the editions Chopin's indications were clearly extended. category imprint: Differences between sources |
