In the main text we give the title and dedication in the undoubtedly authentic version adopted in FE. The extensions of both the title (in GE and EE) and the dedication (in EE) most probably come from the editors. See the Etude in C major, No. 1, bar 1.

The authenticity of the b note's hold is undoubtedly certified only in Ap (only in this bar – cf. bars 12 and 39). The ties featured in a part of the first editions are either possibly (GE) or certainly (EE3, probably under the influence of GE) a revision. Arbitrarily added, allegedly missing ties in the places in which not all components of two-note chords or chords are held with ties are to be found in first editions of Chopin's pieces on a number of occasions. To the main text we adopt the undoubtedly authentic version of FE (→EE2→EE3).

In EE Fontana added here the fingering which was the literal repetition of Chopin's indication for the upper voice in bars 1-2.

On the 2nd beat of the bar in the R.H. we give the E minor triad (with a  before g2) according to FE (→EE2→EE3) and Ap. The natural is, however, absent in FEcor and it was also not included in the copy which served as the base text for GE. In order to avoid the mode discrepancy between the parts of both hands, the reviser of GE1 took the decision to add a  raising g1 into g1 in the L.H. In GE2 and subsequent ones, an additional  was added before g2 in the R.H. These arbitrary changes were also introduced in EE4.

In the manuscripts there are no cautionary naturals before the first two semiquavers in the upper voice. In FE (→GE,EE) there is a sign before e2, while in GE and EE4 a  was added also before f2.
