b. 79

composition: Op. 45, Prelude in C♯ minor

..

In the second line of Cadenza the sources indicate a number of differences in the presence of accidentals. They do not cause any doubts concerning the text, therefore, we signalise them altogether.

b. 79

composition: Op. 45, Prelude in C♯ minor

..

In FE1 the 3rd quaver in the 4th group in the line is g-c1. The error, consisting in the exchange of accidentals, is proven by:

  • unjustified violation of the figuration’s scheme;
  • correct text of GE;
  • unjustified accidentals in the next group, a  before the 2nd quaver g and a  before c1 at the end of the group.

In FE2 and EE, trying to correct a few of the wrong pitches resulting from that error, a  was added before at the beginning of the 5th group. Moreover, in EE1 two erroneous signs were replaced: the  before the lower note was replaced with a natural and the  before the upper one was deleted. The correct text was introduced only in EE2.

composition: Op. 45, Prelude in C♯ minor

FE has b1-fas the 3rd quaver in the 5th group of the line, with the lower note having a natural, which is incomprehensible after b1 in the previous quaver. The notation also influences the pitch of the 1st quaver in the next group, in which cis the lower note, which, in turn, makes the  before the next csuperfluous. The anomalies in the notation, together with irregular progression of diminished four-note chords, enable to identify a mistake in this situation. That assumption is proven by the undoubtedly correct version of GE with c2-f2. In EE1 the version of FE was revised, eliminating the superfluous  before the second b1, while the correct text was reintroduced only in EE2.
