The asterisk  is only present on GC (→GE). Its absence in the remajning sources is doubtless due to oversight, probably on the part of Chopin himself. Cf. bar. 240.

FE has no pedal mark written for those bars. This is definitely an accidental omission, yet we do not know whether it was made by the engraver or by Chopin himself.

EE and GC (→GE) have the  mark placed under the last chord, while FE has it placed after that chord. It is difficult to guess without the autograph what Chopin's authentic notation was like, and anyway even that notation could have been ambiguous. For our main text we adopt the version of the two out of three sources probably based on the autograph, i.e. EE and GC. A similar situation occurs in the analogous bar  460.

In GC, the  mark is placed so inaccurately that seems to apply beginning from the quavers. This is how the notation was interpreted in GE. We give the definitely correct version of EE and FE.
