Pedalling

b. 477-479

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

No markings in EE & FE

Pedalling in GC

..

We present the pedalling of GC (rewritten with an error in GE), as it is difficult to imagine that Chopin omitted it purposefully while preparing FE or the basis for EE

b. 501

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

 in EE

GC (→GE)

Out of the three offerred placements of the  mark by the sources, for the main text we adopt the EE version, consistent with the variant of pedalling most often appearing in the corresponding parts, e.g. in bars 207, 215 and 223.

Our variant suggestion

..

There are no grounds to question the authenticity of pedal releasing marks in FE (in b. 509), or in GC (→GE) in b. 510. However, the EE pedalling - a separate pedal mark per one chord in b. 510 - seems substantively very doubtful, as in most cases Chopin marked the necessity of adding the sound of notes played in different time. We believe the basis for EE may have had two  marks by mistake and the engraver or editor while trying to make sense out of this notation, added . In the main text we present our variant proposal that includes two undoubtedly authentic versions of pedalling.

b. 513

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

 in EE & GC (→GE)

..

In FE the  mark is placed imprecisely as proven by its compared notations in the remaining sources and corresponding places.

b. 521-525

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

 in EE

Pedalling in GC (→GE)

..

In EE there is no  mark in b. 521, while the mark is present below the pauuse on the second beat of the bar in b. 525, which is na obvious error. GC (→GE) and FE differ in the placement of  in b. 525. For the main text we adopt the FE mark, consistent with many corresponding bars.
