Pedalling

b. 42

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

 in EE

No sign in GC (→GE) & FE

..

The asterisk mark  can only be found in EE. We give it in our main text despite the fact that editorial revision cannot entirely be ruled out here. In practice, the pedal can be depressed a little longer, until the sustained notes c and cresound completely.

b. 159

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Pedalling in EE & GC

No markings in GE1

 in GE2

Pedalling in FE

Our suggestion

..

Lack of pedal marking in GE1 is an obvious error. GE2 has  under the octave in bar 159, which is also obviously wrong. In the editors' opinion, also the premature release of the pedal in EE and GC is erroneous – in other similar situations the pedal remains depressed for at least 4 bars. Our proposal corresponds to the placement of the  mark that is most often seen in analogous places.

b. 171-172

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

 in EE & GC (→GE)

 in FE

Variant suggestion of the editors

..

Both asterisk marks  appearing in the sources are definitely authentic. Chopin wrote the version of FE (asterisk in bar 171) probably later than the version of EE and GC (asterisk in bar 172), yet there are no premises to consider it as definitive. That is why in the main text we give both pedalling alternatives as variants.

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

 in EE

No sign in GC (→GE)

 in FE

Editors' variant suggestion

..

Just like in bars 171-172, both asterisk marks  (in bar 179 and 180) are definitely authentic and in our opinion they may be treated as variants.

b. 187-188

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

No pedalling in EE, GC (→GE) & FE

Our suggestion

..

We suggest adding pedal marks, as in similar bars 231-232.
