Pedalling
b. 42

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

The asterisk mark can only be found in EE. We give it in our main text despite the fact that editorial revision cannot entirely be ruled out here. In practice, the pedal can be depressed a little longer, until the sustained notes c and c2 resound completely. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: No pedal release mark |

b. 159

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Lack of pedal marking in GE1 is an obvious error. GE2 has under the octave in bar 159, which is also obviously wrong. In the editors' opinion, also the premature release of the pedal in EE and GC is erroneous – in other similar situations the pedal remains depressed for at least 4 bars. Our proposal corresponds to the placement of the mark that is most often seen in analogous places. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: GE revisions , Inaccuracies in GC |

b. 171-172
|
composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor
..
Both asterisk marks appearing in the sources are definitely authentic. Chopin wrote the version of FE (asterisk in bar 171) probably later than the version of EE and GC (asterisk in bar 172), yet there are no premises to consider it as definitive. That is why in the main text we give both pedalling alternatives as variants. category imprint: Differences between sources |

Just like in bars 171-172, both asterisk marks (in bar 179 and 180) are definitely authentic and in our opinion they may be treated as variants. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors of GC |

We suggest adding pedal marks, as in similar bars 231-232. category imprint: Editorial revisions |
