composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

A dot between the notes in A (→GE1FE)

No dot in EE

A dot above the notes in GE2 (→GE3)

The editors' suggestion

..

It is not certain whether the dot visible in A between the two notes of the sixth a1-f2 is a staccato sign or a miniature blot of ink without any significance. In all the places where Chopin marked staccato in a similar context, dots are placed above the notes. Therefore we leave the decision about taking this particular dot into consideration to the performer.

b. 18-19

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

 in A and GE2 (→GE3)

 in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The  in A certainly applies to the 3rd beat of bar 18. Despite that, in GE1 (→FEEE) it was placed at the beginning of bar 19, according to a rather mechanically applied rule that markings of that type should be placed in advance. In GE2 (→GE3) this interpretation was revised and the marking moved back to bar 18.

The 2nd and 3rd crotchet in A

FE (→EE1EE2)

The version of FE with a cautionary

..

The versions of A (→GE) only differ in the presence or absence of a  before c1. The version of FE (→EE1EE2) results from Chopin's correction; we adopt it - supplemented with a cautionary  before e flat1 - for our main text.  EE3 returned to the version of GE1 (with only the graphic layout modified).

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

Pedalling in A (→GE2GE3)

No pedalling in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

In A, the whole-bar pedalling is written. Lack of markings in  GE1 (→FEEE) may be either a result of Chopin's correction (as the comparison with the analogous bars 50 and 112 suggests) or the engraver's omission (as suggested by lack of any traces of deletions and by the omission of pedalling in the following bar 19). In GE2 (→GE3), the markings were added on the basis of A.
