Issues : Cautionary accidentals

b. 15-16

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

..

In A (→GE1) there is a cautionary  before g flat1 at the beginning of bar 16. The unnecessary sign was omitted in FE (-→EE1EE2), and in GE2 (→GE3) it was moved one quaver earlier, to bar 15. In EE3, a  was added in bar 16, probably on the basis of GE1.

FE (→EE1EE2)

The version of FE with a cautionary

..

The versions of A (→GE) only differ in the presence or absence of a  before c1. The version of FE (→EE1EE2) results from Chopin's correction; we adopt it - supplemented with a cautionary  before e flat1 - for our main text.  EE3 returned to the version of GE1 (with only the graphic layout modified).

In A (→GE1), cautionary flats are entered before the octave g flat2-g flat3. In FE (→EE) they were removed, and the flats added before the octave a flat2-a flat3. Such a notation coincides with our editorial assumptions. In GE2 (→GE3) flats were also added before a flat2-a flat3, yet the accidental before g flat2-g flat3 were not removed.

According to the principles governing use of cautionary accidentals that we have adopted, the  before g flat in the 3rd chord is unnecessary. The reason why Chopin put it in A (→GE→FEEE) was probably the non-typical chord orthography that may bring associations with the diminished triad g - c sharp1- e1. Chopin introduced that enharmonically changed notation in the last phase of writing A, which is testified by the visible deletion of the chord originally written as the previous one.
