The asterisks in bars 64, 68 and 72 are placed in A at the end of the bar, after the 3rd crotchet if the L.H. In GE1 (→FE→EE) they were printed earlier, under the 3rd crotchet. The pedal release proposed by the editors, ever earlier than that, takes into account Chopin's notation in analogous bars 80, 84 and 88. A shorter pedal seems to better correspond with the final version of the rhythm in those bars. In this bar – exceptionally – A (→GE1→FE→EE) has under the 3rd crotchet of the bar. It is not clear whether we are dealing here with inaccurate notation, or whether Chopin indeed wanted the pedalling for that bar to differ slightly from the previous bars; therefore we retain the notation of A in our main text.
