Pedalling

b. 64-72

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

 in A and GE2 (→GE3)

 in GE1 (→FEEE)

Our proposition

..

The  asterisks in bars 64, 68 and 72 are placed in A at the end of the bar, after the 3rd crotchet if the L.H. In GE1 (→FEEE) they were printed earlier, under the 3rd crotchet. The pedal release proposed by the editors, ever earlier than that, takes into account Chopin's notation in analogous bars 80, 84 and 88. A shorter pedal seems to better correspond with the final version of the rhythm in those bars. In GE2 (→GE3) the pedal release moment was marked as in A.

b. 65-87

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

 in A

 in GE (→FEEE)

..

In A, the asterisks  in bars 65-66, 70-71, 73-74, 76, 79, 81-82  and 86-87 are placed at the end of the bar after the 3rd crotchet of the L.H. In GE (→FEEE) they were printed earlier, under the 3rd crotchet.

b. 67

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

 in A (→GEFEEE)

An alternative suggested by the editors

..

In our main text we give the  at the end of the bar, after the 3rd crotchet, which is in compliance with the notation of A. However, we cannot rule out the possibility that the placement of the asterisk slightly earlier, under the 3rd crotchet, in GE (→FEEE) may in this case reflect Chopin's intention, as he applied precisely the same notation in the analogous bar 83.

b. 80-84

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

 in A

 in GE (→FEEE)

..

The asterisks  in bars 80 and 84 are written in A before the 3rd crotchet of the L.H. This corresponds with the crotchet of the R.H. (and not with the minim, as in bar 78 and analog.) on the 2nd beat of the bar. In GE (→FEEE) the asterisks were placed under the 3rd crotchet. Cf. bars 64, 68 and 72.

b. 83

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

 in A (→GE1FEEE)

 in GE2 (→GE3)

..

In this bar – exceptionally – A (→GE1FEEE) has  under the 3rd crotchet of the bar. It is not clear whether we are dealing here with inaccurate notation, or whether Chopin indeed wanted the pedalling for that bar to differ slightly from the previous bars; therefore we retain the notation of A in our main text. The asterisk  consistent with the prevailing pedalling pattern of  A was introduced in GE2 (→GE3).
