Pedalling

b. 103

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

Without  in A (→GE1FE)

 in EE and GE2 (→GE3)

The editors' proposition

..

In A (→GE1FE) there is no . The asterisk was added in EE and GE2 (→GE3) under the 3rd crotchet of the L.H. Putting the asterisk after that crotchet, suggested by the editors, reproduces Chopin's pedalling in the analogous bar 41.

b. 105

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

No  in A (→GE1FE)

 in EE and GE2 (→GE3)

..

In A (→GE1FE), the asterisk  is missing, which must be considered a mistake in that context. We add  at the end of the bar in accordance with the original pedalling of the analogous bar 43. An identical addition was already made in EE and GE2 (→GE3).

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

 in A (→GEFEEE)

The editors' alternative proposition

..

The pedal release mark is placed in the sources after the 3rd crotchet of the L.H. Taking into consideration the notation in the analogous bars 13 and 45 and in the further sections of the progression (bars 109 and 111), we suggest an alternative solution, being convinced that Chopin's notation here may be inaccurate.

b. 108-111

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

 in A and GE3

GE1 (→FEEE)

..

In bars 108-111 in A, the pedal release marks are written before the 3rd crotchet of the L.H. In GE1 (→FEEE were placed after the 3rd crotchet, which is definitely an error considering the changing harmonies in bars 108 and 110. In GE2, three out of four marks were moved, yet conformity with the notation of A was only retained in bar 108. Full conformity with A was restored in GE3.

A possible reading of  in A

A probable reading of  in A (→GEFEEE)

..

The location of the asterisk  in A seems doubtful. We consider the asterisk under the 3rd crotchet to be more likely, as written more clearly by Chopin in the analogous bar 51, This is also how that detail was understood in GE (→FEEE).
