Our proposition

A has the asterisks  written at the end of the bar, after the 3rd crotchet in the L.H. However, in analogous bars 80, 84 Chopin placed the asterisks earlier, i.e. before the 3rd crotchet. In our opinion, the markings in bars 80 &  84 convey Chopin's idea more precisely, as:

  •  before the 3rd crotchet of the bar better correspond with the final version of the rhythm in those bars;
  • in A, the pedalling of bars 80 and 84 clearly differs from that found in the neighbouring bars, which is not coincidental but testifies to thoughtful and precise notation of pedal marks in that place. On the other hand, pedalling in bars 64, 68 and 72 does not deviate from the pattern prevailing in the entire fragment, which does not guarantee meticulous or well-thought-out notation.

GE1 (→FEEE) have  under the 3rd crotchet, while in GE2 (→GE3) the pedal release moment was marked in line with A.
