b. 91-94

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

 in A and GE3

 in GE1 (→FEEE)

 in GE2

..

In the main text we place the asterisks  at the end of each one of those bars, in accordance with the notation of A. In GE1 (→FEEE) the asterisks were moved under rests on the 3rd beat of the bar. In GE3, care was taken to keep the notation in conformity with A, and the change in bar 93 was introduced already in GE2.

A flat in A (→GE)

A flat1-A flat in FE (→EE )

The editors' proposition

..

As the 1st crotchet A (→GE) has just A flat, as in the previous bar. Chopin added A flat1 in the proofing of FE (→EE). At the same time the staccato sign, independent of the right hand, was omitted, which definitely was not Chopin's intention. In our main text we give both the added note and the omitted dot. Cf. bars 92 and 93.

Wedges in A

No signs in GE1 or EE

Dots in FE

Dots in GE2 (→GE3)

..

In A, the quavers a flat at the beginning of those bars have wedges;  in GE1 the wedges were omitted. In FEstaccato dots were added instead, which is most probably the result of Chopin's intervention. Dots were also added in GE2 (→GE3). Absence of any signs in EE might mean that some of the changes in FE were introduced after copies had been sent to London as base texts for EE1.

A probable long accent in A

A possible short accent in A

No mark in GE1 (→FEEE)

An accent in the L.H. in GE2 (→GE3)

..

It is not clear what type of accent was used in A; it collides with the indication cresc., which makes it difficult to determine its shape. We consider a long accent to be more probable (cf. signs in the neighbouring bars). Omission of the accent mark in GE1 (→FEEE) is definitely an error. The accent was put back in GE2 (→GE3), yet  ascribing it to the L.H. chord seems unfortunate.

A slur over the triplet in A (→GE1FEEE)

No triplet slur in GE2 (→GE3)

..

In A (→GE1FEEE), the triplet on the 2nd beat of the bar has an additional slur. We omit that slur in line with our General Editorial Principlespoint 16. The slur is also absent from GE2 (→GE3).
