Slurs
b. 49-50
|
composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major
..
In A, the extent of the slur beginning on the 2nd beat of bar 49 is not quite clear. Both presented possibilities have some musical justification, yet a comparison with similar places in the text (bars 17-18 and 101-102) makes us consider the shorter slur to be more probable; this is also how that slur was understood in GE (→FE→EE). category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness issues: Overextending slur , Inaccurate slurs in A |

b. 57
|
composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major
..
The extent of the slur in the L.H. that begins in A on the 3rd crotchet of bar 56 is not quite clear. In the editors' opinion that slur probably led to the deleted chord at the beginning of bar 57. In GE1 (→FE) it was brought as far as the 2nd crotchet, which does not follow in any way from A. That notation, incomprehensible in the context, was changed in EE, as well as in GE2 (→GE3) in the manner that we consider to be the most proper reading of A. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Inaccuracies in GE , Inaccurate slurs in A |

b. 58-59
|
composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major
..
The point where the slur over bar 59 exactly begins is not clear in A; most probably the slur extends from the quavers at the beginning of that bar, just like in more clearly notated analogous bars 63 and 67. This is how it was initially interpreted in GE1 (→FE→EE1→EE2), in which it was then prolonged (the traces of the deleted initial slur start are visible in GE1). Ultimately, GE has a slur beginning on f2 in bar 58, which is most probably due to Chopin's intervention (see the note to bars 62-63). That last-mentioned version was also introduced in EE3. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations |

b. 62-63
|
composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major
..
The note f2 on the 3rd beat of bar 62 is not embraced by the slur in A, as the slur begins from bar 63. Originally GE1 had the same slur, yet it was later corrected by having its beginning moved to the last crotchet of bar 62 (the traces of the erased fragment are clearly visible). In all probability that change was made on Chopin's request. The original (shorter) slur was preserved in FE (→EE1→EE2), while GE2 (→GE3) and EE3 have the corrected version. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: EE revisions , Authentic corrections of GE |

b. 63-64
|
composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

The interpretation of the slurs in A poses some difficulties, as both the first and the second slur were lengthened and the sequence and the final result of those corrections are unclear. In our opinion, the correction of the second slur is final and binding. This opinion was also reflected in GE (→FE→EE). category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Inaccurate slurs in A , Corrections in A |
