First French edition, based on a copy of GE1 without the final alterations – see bar 225. In FE1 a number of errors and inaccuracies from the base text were corrected, but new mistakes were made. Some changes and complements were also introduced.

The corrected GE defects include:

However, some mistakes of the base text were left uncorrected, e.g. the overlooked  before a in bar 138 or the  before g in bar 175, appearing too late.

FE1 own mistakes include:

The FE1 revisions concern mainly articulation, including slurs, and accidentals, e.g.:

  • changing wedges to staccato dots in bar 56, 333-334,
  • adding a L.H. slur in bar 57 & 61 and 384,
  • shortening the accents in bars 78-79, 249-253, extending the accents in bar 218,
  • removing the unnecessarily repeated  before f1 in bar 115,
  • changing, generally subtly, the range of dynamic hairpins, e.g. in bars 129-130,
  • adding a  restoring B1 in bar 304,
  • adding a cautionary  before f2 in bar 323.

As far as the minor changes regarding slurs, and particularly the range of dynamic hairpins, are concerned, one can assume both revision and the engraver's inaccuracy.
