First Italian edition based on a copy of GE without the final alterations – see bar 225. The text of the Stichvorlage was given in IE1 with inaccuracies, e.g. long accents interpreted as short ones (cf. bars 40-42) or  hairpins (bars 52-53), and errors were sometimes not avoided, e.g.:

  • omittig the  in bar 11, the accent in bar 232;
  • omitting the L.H. slurs in bars 28-29, the a1-g1 slur in bars 169-170;
  • d1 minim instead of a semibreve in bar 92;
  • dividing the slur in bars 249-250;
  • omitting the  before the 1st L.H. note (e1) in bar 347.

Arbitrary changes were also introduced, e.g. adding a 4th slur between the L.H. chords in bar 61 and a 2nd slur in the R.H. bottom voice in bar 352.

In some cases, IE guessed Chopin's intention in spite of a mistake or an inaccuracy of the Stichvorlage, or removed certain defects or awkward elements of notation, e.g.:

  • the vague L.H. slur in bars 124-125 was reproduced as a continuous slur,
  •  was added before g1 in bar 156, overlooked by Chopin,
  • the erroneous augmentation dot to e1 in bar 160 was omitted,
  • the second wedge in bar 313 was moved to its right place, over the 7th quaver.

However, some GE mistakes were repeated unchanged, e.g. the erroneous  before the top note of the 2nd chord in bar 11, the omitted  before a3 in bar 53 or the  before a in bar 105 and the  before g in bar 175, appearing too late.
