b. 193

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Wedge in A

Staccato dot & whole-bar slur in GE (→FE,EE)

Whole-bar slur in IE

Wedge & slur from 2nd quaver suggested by the editors

..

In A the initial octave is provided with a staccato mark, which we interpret as a wedge – although small, the mark is clearly oblong. The differences between the notation of the staccato marks in the motif consisting of three C-c octaves are confirmed by the unambiguous notation of the analogous motifs in bars 1-2, 9-10, 11-12, 184-185 and 186-187. In GE (→FE,EE) a dot was provided, which was omitted in IE due to the slur beginning from this note or simply overlooked. A slur of this range was added in GE (→FE,EE,IE) – in A Chopin omitted it – referring to the inaccurate interpretation of the Chopinesque slurs in analogous bars (cf., e.g. bars 10-12). In the main text we add a slur after the authentic slurs in the aforementioned bars.

In EE1 the  raising b1 to b1 is missing. The mistake was corrected in EE2.

 in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

In the main text we reproduce the dynamic markings after A. The GE version (→FE,EE,IE) constitutes an inaccurate and simplified image thereof, typically adjusting – inaccurately – the range of the  hairpin to a clear rhythmic structure, which in this case is a bar.

Dots & wedge suggested by the editors

Leaving this one motif of repeated octaves without articulation markings – cf. bars 184-185, 186-187 and 192-193 – must be considered Chopin's oversight, hence in the main text we add respective marks.

b. 195-197

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

..

In A Chopin omitted the accidentals to the top notes of both chords in bar 195 and to the second chord in bar 197. The necessary accidentals were added in GE (→FE,EE,IE). In the main text, in addition to supplementing the omitted accidentals, we omit the  to a1 in the 2nd chord in bar 195, unnecessarily repeated by Chopin.
