Wedge in A

Staccato dot & whole-bar slur in GE (→FE,EE)

Whole-bar slur in IE

Wedge & slur from 2nd quaver suggested by the editors

In A the initial octave is provided with a staccato mark, which we interpret as a wedge – although small, the mark is clearly oblong. The differences between the notation of the staccato marks in the motif consisting of three C-c octaves are confirmed by the unambiguous notation of the analogous motifs in bars 1-2, 9-10, 11-12, 184-185 and 186-187. In GE (→FE,EE) a dot was provided, which was omitted in IE due to the slur beginning from this note or simply overlooked. A slur of this range was added in GE (→FE,EE,IE) – in A Chopin omitted it – referring to the inaccurate interpretation of the Chopinesque slurs in analogous bars (cf., e.g. bars 10-12). In the main text we add a slur after the authentic slurs in the aforementioned bars.
