b. 261-262

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Slur to c2 in b. 261 in A (→GE)

Slur to c2 in b. 262 in FE (→EE)

..

As in bars 94-95, the difference in the slur's range probably results from the inaccurate interpretation of the 'encompassing' A slur, yet this time the excessively long slur appears in FE (→EE). In the main text we provide the A slur, compliant with the phrase structure, correctly interpreted in GE.

b. 261

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

No extra slur in A (→GE)

Extra slur in FE (→EE)

..

The additional slur in FE (→EE) is part of an irregular group marking. Chopin would generally insert such slurs along with a digit determining the number of notes in such a group (e.g. in a similar context in bar 98 in A); however, he would often omit them or included in longer phrase marks. In this case the slur must have been added to [FC] or FE1, yet it seems highly unlikely that it could have been done by Chopin.

Staccato dot in b. 266 in A (→GE)

No marks in FE (→EE)

Dots in b. 262 & 266 suggested by the editors

..

In the main text we suggest adding a staccato dot in bar 262, as this is the only one among the four crotchets in analogous bars (bar 95, 99 and 266) that Chopin did not provide with a dot in A. In FE (→EE) dots are absent in all the above bars.

b. 262-263

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

4 slurs, 2 notes each in A (→#Wn)

2 slurs, 4 notes each in FE (→EE)

..

The FE slurs may be authentic, although the random nature of this variant rules out a serious change of concept. Chopin could have added these two four-quaver slurs in a place in which the copyist or the engraver overlooked the actual shorter slurs. They indicate rather musical articulation (motifs) than a pianistic gesture, as the L.H. slurs written in A in bars 95-96 and 99-100.

b. 263

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

..

In FE1 the 1st quaver in the 2nd half of the bar is a d. The mistake was corrected – perhaps at Chopin's request – in FE2 (→EE).
