GE1 is based on a proof-copy of FE, which does not take into account the latest changes. Considering that the Variations were the first of Chopin's works to be printed by Breitkopf, one can assume that the composer, having already had some experience with publishers, could have made at least cursory proofreading to GE1. Numerous revisions were also added – among others, appearing in FE, very typical of Chopin during this period, two kinds of staccato marks, wedges and dots, were simplified to only one, the dots.

Possible examples of Chopin's proofreading, proven by the visible traces of changes, include the change of d2 to c2 in the last chord in bar 153 or moving the flats and naturals in bar 197 to the right place. Chopin could also be the author of the variants in bar 110 or 128.

In GE1 many mistakes present in FE were noticed, e.g. the majority of the rhythmic errors in the theme and in the first variation in bars 33-88 were corrected, a considerable number of necessary accidentals (omitted in FE) were added, the erroneous G-f seventh was corrected to an F-f octave in bar 22 and the f-e1 seventh to a g-e1 sixth in bar 141.

However, the edition is not free from its own mistakes, most often consisting in overlooking articulation elements (e.g. in bar 133), but it should be noted that they are not numerous, particularly when compared with FE. Some FE mistakes were repeated as well, e.g. the position of the bass clef in bar 73 or the contradiction between the ties and the quaver rest in bar 76.

In addition to the large-scale revision changing wedges to staccato dots, a few arbitrary changes were performed in GE1:

  • in bar 1 the zf mark present in FE was replaced by a ; the same mark was changed to rf in bar 78 and 207;
  • in bar 88  was printed instead of ;
  • in bar 160 the mordent was changed to a trill.

There are copies of GE1 with a different price on the cover (3 versions).
