Issues : Wedges

b. 29-31

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

Wedges in A

Dots in GE (→FE)

Absence of any signs in EE

..

The staccato signs in A are definitely more like wedges than dots. Still, GE (→FE) has dots in all those places. Absence of any signs in EE is an obvious error.

b. 29

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

A wedge in AI

A dot in A (→GEFEEE)

..

It is hard to regard the mark in A as In bar 29 all the first editions have a staccato dot instead of a wedge.  In our main text we rely on AI (→A). The same applies to bars 5 and 9.

b. 29-30

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

Wedge in A

Three dots in FE

Two dots in GE1 & EE2 (→EE3)

One dot in GE2 (→GE3)

No marks in GE4 (→GE5)

Four dots in EE4

..

The sources display a great variety of staccato marks over the first two quavers in these bars. In the main text we give the elements of indisputable authenticity – the wedge of A in bar 29 and the dots added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE in bar 30. According to us, the indications of FE and EE4 may also be included in the versions which are potentially compatible with Chopin's intention.

b. 29-32

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

8 wedges in A

7 dots in GE1 (→FEEE)

8 dots in GE2

..

Eight staccato signs on the first crotchets in these bars (in both hands) are clearly wedges in A (only the sign in the L.H. in bar 30 could be considered a dot, in another context). In spite of this, the editions reproduced them as dots, which is a simplification characteristic of the engraver of GE1, uncorrected in any of the remaining editions. The absence of the sign in the R.H. in bar 31 is a patent oversight of GE1 (→FEEE).

b. 29

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

Wedge in Atut (→FEEE)

Dot in GE

..

The change of the staccato mark from a wedge to a dot is a frequent revision (inaccuracy?) of GE in this Concerto and other works published by Kistner – cf. e.g. bar 92.
