Wedge in A

Three dots in FE

Two dots in GE1 & EE2 (→EE3)

One dot in GE2 (→GE3)

No marks in GE4 (→GE5)

Four dots in EE4

The staccato marks for the first two quavers in these bars underwent an evolution both in authentic sources and in the subsequent ones. The wedge of A at the beginning of bar 29 was recreated in FE as a dot, yet it was omitted in GE and EE2 (→EE3). In a proofing of FE (→GE1,EE), Chopin added dots over the 1st and 2nd quavers in bar 30. Probably it was on this ground that the reviser of EE4 added dots also in bar 29, which can be considered as justified. In GE2 the dot over the 1st quaver in bar 30 was overlooked, this defect was not corrected in the next editions; moreover, in GE4 (→GE5) the dot over the 2nd quaver in this bar was also omitted, as a result of which these editions were left with no staccato marks in these bars.

In the main text we give the wedge of A in bar 29 and the dots added in a proofreading of FE in bar 30. We also consider the use of the indications included in FE and EE4 as equally justified.
