b. 16-17

composition: Op. 10 No 7, Etude in C major

Wedges in A

Dots in FE (→GE,EE)

..

It is unclear whether Chopin wanted the first quavers in this bar to be provided with wedges, as it is in A, or dots, which were printed in FE (→GE,EE). Taking into account numerous inaccuracies in reproducing Chopin's wedges, in the main text we give preference to the notation of A.

b. 17

composition: Op. 10 No 7, Etude in C major

No mark in A

Wedge in FE (→GE1,EE)

Dot in GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

In A Chopin omitted the staccato mark in the middle of bar 17, probably due to corrections. We consider the wedge added in a proofreading of FE (→GE1,EE) to be a binding indication of Chopin's intention in this respect. In GE2 (→GE3GE4) the wedge was replaced with a dot.

b. 18

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Staccato dot in EE

Wedge in # GC and FE

Staccato dots in GE

..

In the main text we reproduce the wedge that appears in GC and FE, which is almost certainly in compliance with Chopin's notation. In EE and GE, the staccato sign has the form of a dot (and GE has another dot added under the L.H. part). Cf. the note concerning bar 6.

b. 21-25

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

4 wedges in FC

4 staccato dots in FE (→EE) & GE2

3 dots in GE1

..

The F crotchets at the beginning of bars 21, 23, 25 and 27 are provided with wedges in FC and with dots in FE (→EE). As the second time (bars 117-123) both sources are provided with dots, to the main text we adopt this kind of markings. In GE the wedges of FC were reproduced as dots; moreover, in GE1 the mark in bar 21 was overlooked, supplemented in GE2.

b. 22

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Wedge in A

Dot in FC (→GE)

No mark in FE (→EE)

..

In A the staccato marking with which Chopin provided the last octave looks like a small wedge. However, in the subsequent appearances of this motif, i.e. in b. 46 and 154, the composer used a dot; thus, we give it in the main text. After all, Chopin did not question the dot present in FC, although he had the opportunity to do so, since the extension of the slur proves that he paid attention to that motif while proofreading FC. The dot is also supported by the situation in the last analogous place: in bar 605 the mark overlooked in A was most probably added by Chopin in FC and it is a dot.
