b. 4-12

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

..

In A in bar 4 (and bar 12, which repeats this bar) the  hairpins embrace with their range the 2nd and 3rd chords in the bar. This is how it was more or less reproduced in FE, yet minor inaccuracies caused that in GE the sign in bar 12 was given a form of an accent, while in EE in both bars it was printed one quaver too early.

Staccato signs in bars 5 and 9 in A (→GEFE)

No signs in EE

..

Missing in bars 5 and 9 in EE are the staccato dots under D. This is probably the engraver's fault.

b. 5

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

 in GC (→GE) & FE

 in EE

..

The sources do not state clearly which quaver is affected by the  sign. One can choose between the 2nd quaver, as it is in FE and as GE interpreted the unclear sign of GC (it could have been assigned to the rest of the L.H., falling on the 2nd quaver or apply it to the 3rd, or even the 4th quaver of the bar), or the beginning of the bar, as EE interpreted the notation of FE. The piano and sound reality make us consider both versions to be possible. In the main text we reproduce the notation of the base source, i.e. FE.

b. 5

composition: Op. 16, Rondo in E♭ major

..

In the absence of [A], it is difficult to determine whether the curved line over the g notes in FE (→GE,EE) is a tie sustaining those notes or a motivic slur (in Chopin's autographs, the differentiation is possible due to the shape of the curved lines). According to us, it is a motivic slur that is more likely here.

b. 5-6

composition: Op. 16, Rondo in E♭ major

3 short accents in FE (→GE,EE)

3 long accents suggested by the editors

..

In all sources, 3 subsequent accents in bars 5-6 are short. We consider it to be an inaccuracy of the engraver and suggest long accents in the main text:

  • long notes – in this case dotted g1 minims – are generally provided with long accents by Chopin;
  • the motif at the end of bar 5 is a repetition of the motif in bar 4, in which a long accent is unquestionable in FE.
