The dedication in AI

The title and dedication in A (→GE1)

FE and GE2

..

AI is not titled, and the dedication written there differs from the later one that Chopin wrote for the entire opus in A (→GEFEEE). The replacement of 4 Mazurkas with Quatre Mazurkas in FE and GE2 does not change the content of the authentic title from A (→GE1). However, the addition to the title in EE is definitely inauthentic; the English editor used to add the expression Souvenir de la Pologne to each consecutive opus of Chopin's mazurkas.

The cautionary accidentals before c1 in the L.H. were added in the L.H. in one of the last proofreadings of FE (→GE). They are also included in EE, apart from the  missed in bar 5 in EE2 (the engraver of EE also omitted  in bar 6, thus there are no accidentals on the entire stave of the 3rd great stave). This undoubtedly necessary addition probably comes from Chopin, although the signs are not to be found in any of the manuscripts.

Metronome marking with time signature in GC (→GE)

Metronome marking at start of Etude in FE & EE

..

Placing the metronome indication already at the beginning of the Etude may be a result of the routine interpretation of the engravers of FE and EE who did not see a reason to separate it from the Lento indication. Cf. the Etude in A minor, No. 11, bars 1-5.

Chopin's intention of providing all bass notes with staccato dots remains beyond any doubt, despite the fact that in A the last dot is missing (or it is written in an unclear manner). It is FE and GE2 (→GE3) that include the totally correct notation in this respect. In the remaining editions, the notation is more or less inaccurate – GE completely omits the dots in these bars, while EE puts them only next to a few notes, rather accidentally (one dot was omitted in each of the following bars: 1-3 and 5-6).

b. 1-12

composition: Op. 26 No 1, Polonaise in C♯ minor

..

Bars 1-12, marked in A by Chopin with a conventional repetition sign, were rewritten in the editions. According to us, it is an arbitrary decision of the French editor, probably resulting from graphic issues – from the layout of the text on the pages. Consequently, analogous places display minor differences, which – due to the repetition in A – were certainly not intended by Chopin. The discrepancies mainly result from oversights and inaccuracy of the engravers and, to a certain extent, from Chopin's superficial review. Due to the fact that in the main text we preserve the notation of A, in the remaining sources, we adopt two manners of displaying the differing elements in the repeated bars 1-12:

  • we put the elements which appear only the first time in parentheses;
  • we put the elements which appear only the second time in square brackets.
