Issues : Inaccuracies in FE

b. 1

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

 in A

 in FE (→GE,EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

In the version for publication the dynamics of the Etude remains undefined until bar 26. Although Chopin could have accepted this state of affairs, it seems right to give the hint written in A (in a variant form) in the main text.

b. 1-14

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

  in A

..

The dynamic hairpins written in A in bars 1, 2, 6, 10 and 14 were not printed in the editions and those in bars 5, 9 and 13 were inaccurately reproduced. Changes in the signs' range are undoubtedly accidental, therefore, in the main text we follow the notation of A. On the other hand, it is unclear whether the omission of the details can be fully blamed on the engraver's inaccuracy (or perhaps haste). The musical image transferred by FE, although less detailed, seems to be convincing and could have been accepted by Chopin. Therefore, we consider the two main, source sets of signs – A and FE – to be equal and we suggest them in the main text in the variant form.

Wedges in A

Dots in FE

GE & EE

..

In bars 2-3, 5-6, 10-11 and 13-14 in the main text, we give undeniable wedges written in A (in comparison, Chopin's dots may be seen over the bass notes in bars 1, 5 and analog.). In FE a part of the marks was omitted (in bars 3, 10 and 11) and the rest was interpreted as dots. The changes, according to us, are of a clearly arbitrary nature. GE and EE generally repeat the version of FE, yet they include a dot also in bar 3.

No pedalling in FE (→GE,EE

Our suggestion

..

In Chopin's notation, the  marks which are not followed by  usually appear at the end of the pieces. In other situations it is mostly a result of an oversight, yet sometimes it seems that Chopin wanted to emphasise a performance of a given fragment with pedal but without a precise indication of each movement of the leg. This is the situation we are probably facing in this place, as the marks of a pedal depressed on each quaver could simply occupy too much space. In order to avoid any ambiguity, in the main text we add con. In the editions the pedal mark was omitted. Cf. bars 11-12.

Slur in A

Slurs in FE (literal reading)

Slurs in GE & EE

..

In FE the slur in bar 3 (last one in the line) ends on the last note in the bar. The mistake contributed to the fact that bar 4 was embraced with a separate slur in GE and EE. In the main text we give the only correct and authentic slur of A. In bars 11-12 the version was faultlessly reproduced in all sources.
