composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

B-b quaver in small script in A & FE

B-b quaver in regular script in AsI & GE (→EE,FESB)

B-b quaver in small script & [m.s.] suggested by the editors

..

The version of GE (→EE,FESB) resulted from a mistake by the engraver of GE1, who did not notice that the B-b octave at the beginning of the bar is written in a smaller font, as belonging to the orchestral part. Chopin restored the correct notation in FE. In order to avoid a similar misunderstanding, in the main text we specify that the soloist is to perform the b2 quaver with the left hand to end the quaver sequence from the previous bar. (Hand crossing is not to be applied when performing the piece without accompaniment.)
The same in bar 359.

f1 in A (→GE)

a-f1 in FE (→EE), contextual interpretation

The addition of a in the proofreading of FE (→EE) is undoubtedly a Chopin improvement (it can be that Chopin corrected his own oversight in A). There is no extending dot next to this note, which, regardless of the reason, has to be considered an inaccuracy in this context.

According to us, due to the absence of traces of corrections performed in print, a possible Chopinesque proofreading of FE (→EE) is less likely than a mistake of the engraver in this case. Therefore, in the main text we give the undoubtedly authentic version of A (→GE). However, from the musical point of view, the version with gis certainly not inferior to it.

GE1 (→GE2) is missing the cautionary  before b2. It may indicate that the accidental was added only just in the last phase of proofreading of FE (→EE). The natural was reintroduced in GE3.

In GE1 the semiquaver opening the characteristic main motif of this movement of the Concerto, recalled here, is A-f. This patent mistake, corrected both in FE (→EE) and in GE2, is probably a result of an unfinished proofreading of A, erroneously printed in this place – the correct note was added, yet the erroneous one was not removed.
