b. 274

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Upper voice slur in A & GE2

Lower voice slur in GE1

Both slurs in FE (→EE)

..

The slur of the bottom voice, appearing in GE instead of the slur of the top voice written in A, is probably a mistake, although its addition by Chopin cannot be entirely excluded (e.g. if in the proof copy no slur was included, Chopin could have added two and the engraver only the bottom one). In any case, in the proofreading of FE (→EE) Chopin restored the top slur, without removing the bottom one, so that next to the version of A one can also notice the version of FE with two slurs. In the main text we give the version of A, since the authenticity of the bottom slur is not as unquestionable as of the top one; moreover, the top slur applies to the entire part of the R.H. by default.

b. 274

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

2 R.H. f notes in AsI

5 R.H. notes in A (→GE)

3 R.H. notes in FE & FESB

4 R.H. notes in EE

Our variant suggestion

..

A version of FE in which R.H. quavers on the 2nd beat do not include the f notes is most likely the result of Chopin's correction of its Stichvorlage, i.e. a copy of GE1. This version, which does not suggest striking these notes with both hands simultaneously, is given in the main text. A similar adjustment was made in EE, but there is no suggestion that Chopin had any influence on the text of this edition.
Noteworthy is the version of AsI, in which Chopin omitted the first quaver on the 2nd beat (similarly to FE), and also deleted the semiquavers on the 1st beat. The removal of these notes, which is a kind of development of the original idea to which Chopin eventually returned, is included in the main text in variant form.

b. 276-277

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

accel. in FEG & FE, literal reading

accelerando in GE

accelerando in EE

..

According to us, the accel. indication written by Chopin in FEG should be understood as "over the 1st quaver in bar 277" and not "from the last quaver in bar 276". This is how it was understood in GE and this is the interpretation we adopt in the main text. The entry underlying the version of FE must have looked similarly. We develop the abbreviation used by Chopin, which is used less frequently nowadays; GE and EE already include the full indication.

b. 276

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Quaver c1 in A & FE (→EE)

Crotchet c1 in GE

..

A line pointing down next to ledger lines (most of the time the first bottom one, i.e. c1 or E – see e.g. the last E in bar 280), sometimes appearing in Chopin's autographs, misled here the engraver of GE. The additional stem is already absent in FE (→EE), which could have been, but did not have to, a result of Chopin's proofreading. However, one has to admit that in this case the extension of cis quite reasonable, as far as the harmony is concerned.

b. 277-278

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

cresc. - - cresc. in FE

 cresc. - - in EE

cresc. - - in FEG (→GE)

..

In the main text we adhere to the dynamic markings written by Chopin in FEG (→GE). In the remaining two first editions cresc. is preceded with a  mark at the beginning of bar 277, which, however, most probably does not indicate a different dynamic concept, as in GE such level of dynamics seems to be most natural after  in bar 273.
