Issues : Errors of GC

b. 167-168

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

All'ottava sign in EE, FE & GE

No sign in GC

..

Missing in GC is the octave sign in the L.H. part. That obvious error was corrected in GE.

b. 174-175

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

in bar 174 in GC (→GE)

in bar 175 in FE (→EE1)

 in EE2

..

A comparison with FE, which is also based on [A], suggests that the  hairpin in GC (→GE) was misplaced – cf. b. 171. The copyist's momentary distraction is also supported by the fact that the slur ends too early (see the next note). Two marks in EE2 probably result from a comparison with the version of GE.

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

Slur in GC

Slur in FE (→EE)

Two slurs in GE

..

The slurring of GC is certainly incomplete and it was completed already in GE. In the main text we give the slur of FE (→EE).

Slurs suggested by the editors

..

A comparison with FE, which is also based on [A], suggests that the earlier division of the slur in GC (→GE) is erroneous. The copyist's momentary distraction is also supported by the misplaced  hairpin, one bar too early (see the previous note). Irrespective of the position of the division of slur, we consider the interpretation of the sources that reproduced it as coinciding slurs to be inaccurate; in the main text we interpret the first slur as a tenuto-slur and end it still in b. 176. It corresponds to the notation of GC as well as to the slurs of FE in an analogous phrase 4 bars ago.

b. 177-178

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

Staccato dot in A

No mark in GC (→GE) & FE

3 dots in EE

..

The staccato dot written in A over the first bass octave in bar 177 was overlooked in other sources except EE. In this edition the dots were also added to the next two bass octaves, in the middle of bar 177 and at the beginning of bar 178.
