b. 433

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Octave D-d in EE & GE2

D-d in GC (→GE1) & FE

..

None of the sources seems to be authentic enough. No accidentals before the third octave in GC (→GE1) and FE suggests its reading as D-d, however, it can be argued that in Chopin's works we often see omission of accidentals in similar situations. On the other hand in EE the naturals must have been added by a revisor (it is more than certain in GE2). In contrast to b. 95, the stylistic criteria suggest erranoeous omission of naturals: bars 433-434 belong to the first part of chromatic progression, which solely aims to retain the the interval structure of motifs. Therefore, the D-d octave version we present as the main one.

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Short accents in EE & GC (→GE)

Long accents in FE

..

We may assume that although the accent marks in GC (→GE) are quite large, when compared with the previous section - short accents in bars 416-431, and with the corresponding bars 91-96 and 99-104 - mostly long accents, they should be interpreted as short ones. Short accents can undoubtedly be found in EE (with the exception of a mark in  b. 439 that must have been omitted). For the main text we adopt long accent found in FE as we see no reason to notate the bars in question differently from the corresponding bars 91-104.

b. 433

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

..

In A the notation of accidentals in this bar is inaccurate:

  • there is only one  before the 1st chord in the R.H.; moreover, it is written in such a way that one cannot be certain which note it concerns (we assume that it is d3),
  • in each of the triplets, a  is only before the 1st note,
  • no  before the bottom note of the third in the L.H. on the 3rd beat of the bar.

The necessary signs were added already in GE1 (→FE); however, the  before the bottom note of the octave in the L.H. at the beginning of the bar was overlooked. EE and GE2 feature the correct notation.
