b. 301-302

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Whole-bar slur in A (→GE1FE)

Whole-bar slurs in both hands in EE

Motivic slurs in both hands in GE2

R.H. motivic slur suggested by the editors

..

The slur of A (→GE1FE) is probably the original version – in analogous bars 295 and 297 Chopin extended similar slurs. The slurs in the L.H. added in EE and GE2 are inauthentic. Cf. bars 303-304 as well as 297-298.

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

No slur in GE

Slur in bar 301 in FE (→EE)

Slur based on GE, our suggestion

..

In the manuscripts these bars were almost certainly marked in an abridged manner as a repetition of b. 68-70. It means that the slur present in [A] (→GE) in b. 68-69 should be in GE also in this place, yet it was overlooked by the engraver. As we adopted that slur to the main text the first time, we also suggest it here.

b. 301

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

The cautionary natural specifying the sound of the 2nd semiquaver was added in the stage of proofreading FE1 (→FE2), probably at Chopin's request. It is worth noting that it was only in the editions that a clear need for this accidental manifested itself, in which the last semiquaver in the previous bar is provided with a flat – in A there is no accidental to any of these notes.

Slurs in A, literal reading

Slurs in A (possible interpretation→GE)

Slurs in FE (→EE)

..

The comparison with analogous bar 135 suggests that the A slurs are inaccurate here, particularly the one that ends on the last crotchet in bar 301. The beginning of the slur in bar 302 is written with a flourish, yet its shape quite convincingly indicates that it is related to the e2 minim and the respective accent. Taking into account the above, in the main text we give the unquestionable FE slurs (→EE).
