b. 174

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

In AsI the top note of the 2nd L.H. chord is written down as f1. In this manuscript, there are no more accidentals in this bar, which is a patent mistake, resulting from the draft nature of AsI. In A, Chopin replaced f1 with e1 and remembered to restore d1; however, he overlooked the fact that it was also e1 on the 4th quaver of the bar that should be restored. This mistake was already corrected in GE1. Consequently, the notation is correct in all editions.

b. 174

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

Crotchet f in AsI

2 quavers f in A (→GEFE,EE,FESB)

..

In the main text we stand by the undoubtedly later version of A (→GEFE,EE,FESB). Rhythmically speaking, it is also closer to the orchestral version, in which we can hear 4 quavers in the cellos and basses: .

b. 174-178

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

No signs in A (→GE)

Arpeggio signs in FE (→EE)

..

In bars 174-175 and 178-179 we introduce the arpeggio marks added – certainly by Chopin – to [FC] or at the stage of proofreading FE directly into the main text.

b. 174

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

cresc. - - in A

cresc. - - in GE

No indication in FE (→EE)

..

Chopin added the cresc. - - indication to A after the basis for FE had been finished, that is [FC]. In GE it was reproduced inaccurately, omitting the dash at the beginning of bar 175.
Similarly, in bar 178.

b. 174

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

b2, b2 b3 in FE (→GE)

b2, b2 & b3 in EE

..

In EE the flat restoring b2 on the 8th semiquaver was added in print, hence it was absent in the basis delivered from Paris. Therefore, it does not come from Chopin, who almost certainly did not proofread EE. It does not completely rule out the authenticity of this version, since the notation of accidentals is inaccurate in a number of places in the Variations, and an accidental placed too late would not be unusual – cf., e.g. bar 172. On the other hand, the FE version (→GE) actually does not contain a mistake (the  added to b3 in the main text is formally a cautionary accidental), while the melodic motif constituted by the first 4 semiquavers in the 2nd half of the bar was used two bars earlier, at the beginning of bar 172. Taking into account the above, in the main text we provide a supplemented version of FE (→GE). The EE text can be considered an acceptable variant.
