b. 196

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

No sign in EE & FE

 in GC (→GE)

..

The asterisk  is only present on GC (→GE). Its absence in the remajning sources is doubtless due to oversight, probably on the part of Chopin himself. Cf. bar. 240.

b. 196

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

c2 in FE0 (→FE,EE,FEGGE)

a1 in GE2 (→GE3)

..

At the beginning of the bar FE (→FEGGE1,EE) has a c2, which is most probably a characteristic error of the engraver (the so-called Terzverschreibung). In analogous bar 24 in all sources there is an anote. A respective correction was introduced in GE2 (→GE3).

b. 196

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

bb2 & b3 in A (→GCGE, →FE1FE2)

bb2 & b3 in FE3 & EE

bb2 & b3 in our suggestion

..

In front of the bb2 and b3 notes in the 2nd half of the bar there are no accidentals in A (→GCGE, →FE1FE2), therefore the flats from the 1st half of the bar are valid. Moreover, the deletion of the sign in front of the bottom note of the chord in the L.H. visible in A and GC (in GC one can see that it was a ) proves that Chopin checked the correctness of notation in both manuscripts. The revisers of EE, FE3 added a  in front of these notes (bb2 and b3). In the main text, in order to avoid doubts, we add cautionary flats in front of b and b2.

b. 196

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

..

The flat lowering a3 to a3 is only in GE and EE. Lack of the sign in the remaining sources is an inaccuracy of notation, characteristic for Chopin.

b. 196

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

..

In the first half of bar there is no  lowering b3 to b3 in A (→GC,FE). This is a typical Chopin's inaccuracy in arpeggios spanning more than one octave.
