b. 161

composition: Op. 22, Polonaise

4 grace notes in FE (→GE)

3 grace notes in EE

..

The version of EE is the initial variant of this place, corrected by Chopin in the penultimate stage of proofreading of FE (→GE). The layout of the first three small semiquavers reveals that in FE the second one was inserted in print between the first g1 and e2.

b. 161

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

..

Both autographs are lacking in the  before the 2nd L.H. quaver (d). The inaccuracy was removed in FE (→EE), which in the case of such a patent defect could have been performed by the reviser. The correct text is also in GE.
Before e1 on the 3rd beat of the bar, all sources except for GE feature a superfluous .

b. 161

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

As in b. 149, in the manuscripts the accidentals restoring c(1) and B (b) at the end of the bar are missing. The mistake was corrected only in FE and yet only partly by adding flats to the last demisemiquaver.

Chords in AsI

Dyads in A (→GEFE,EE,FESB)

..

The version of AsI, written here for the first time (see b. 135-139), undoubtedly presents the initial edition of the alternative accompaniment, generally based on three-note chords, as in the repetition of this phrase an octave higher (b. 165 and the analogous previous ones). Particularly on the 2nd quaver, there was initially an e-g-c1 three-note chord, in which Chopin removed c1, since it was present in the R.H. figuration, but probably added a c, which we give as the text of this source.

b. 162

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

2 slurs (up to bar 163) in A (→GCGE)

No slurs in FE1

2 slurs (up to bar 164) in EE

Continuous slur in FE2 (→FE3)

..

The continuousslur in FE2 (→FE3), reaching the minim in bar 164, results certainly from Chopin's correction, hence we give this version in the main text. However, it should be noted that Chopin did not changed the shorter slurs of A, and only differently supplemented the slurring overlooked in FE1. The version of A (→GCGE) may be considered an equivalent variant. The EE version may be regarded as an alternative reading of the slurs in A.
