b. 121-122

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

..

In A the bottom notes in the majority of the octaves are devoid of naturals (there is only one natural, to B at the beginning of bar 122). In GE (→IE) only the naturals to e and E were added. In EE1 the L.H. part in bar 122 does not contain a single accidental, which was corrected in EE2 by adding two naturals before the 1st, 2nd and 4th octave. The fully correct text is to be found only in FE.

Continuous slur in A

2 slurs in GE (→FE,IE)

1 slur in EE

..

In A the slur in bar 120, which ends a line, reaches the bar line, yet it is very close to the last quaver, hence it can be interpreted both as a slur ending in this bar and as a slur that should be continued. The beginning of the slur in bar 121 is misleading – the main part of the slur starts over the 1st quaver, yet Chopin started writing it much earlier, which is poorly visible due to ink stoppage. When considering the slur as a whole, it undoubtedly indicates that it should be continued from the preceding bar. Therefore, in the main text we provide a continuous slur, which is more natural in terms of music. The version of the editions resulted from an inaccurate interpretation of the slurs by the engraver of GE, while in the case of EE also from an oversight by the engraver of EE.

b. 121-123

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

..

In A there are no  restoring e3 in bar 121 and lowering d2 to d2 in bar 122 and on the penultimate quaver in bar 123, as well as g1 to g1 in bar 123. All the missing accidentals were added in GE (→FE,EE,IE).

Longer  in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

In A the arms of the  hairpin beginning in the preceding bar have a different length. As in many other similar situations, we consider the top arm to be reliable, written first. The GE version (→FE,EE,IE) is a similar revision as in the case of the slur in these bars or a mistake – the engraver could have taken the bottom arm of the mark for a slur, in A written over the L.H. octaves.

Slurs to quaver in FE (→GE)

Slurs over demisemiquavers in EE

..

The shorter slurs over the demisemiquavers in the 1st halves of bar 121 and 123 most probably resulted from routine revision performed by EE – the slurs were adjusted to the demisemiquaver groups and brought into line with the slurs at the end of these bars.
