b. 101-103

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Dashes to middle of bar 103 in A

No signs in GE1 (→FEEE)

cresc. - - to end of bar 103 in FED

Dashes to end of bar 103 in GE2

Dashes to end of bar 103 suggested by the editors

..

The missing dashes marking the range of cresc. is a typical inaccuracy of GE1 (→FEEE). The dashes were added in GE2, leading them – differently than in A – to  in bar 104. According to us, the notation of A is indeed inaccurate, hence in the main text we suggest an appropriate extension of the dashes' range.
The not too legible entry in bars 102-103 in FED most probably means cresc. up to the end of bar 103, which would confirm our decision of marking its range this way.

b. 101-103

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

The notation of accidentals in the figurations in these bars is both refined and inaccurate in A. Chopin took care of the cautionary signs (naturals before the topmost c2c3 and cnotes and flats before d1 and din the ending of bars 101 and 103); however, he omitted a number of necessary signs – naturals returning c2 and cat the beginning of the last group in bars 102 and 103 and naturals raising d2 to d2 and e2 to e2 in bar 103. The editions addressed only the last two mentioned inaccuracies:

  • GE (→FE) did add two naturals in bar 103, yet a mistake was committed at the same time – it was c2 and d2 instead of d2 and ethat were deleted;
  • in EE1 (→EE2) one of the added signs was removed, the superfluous  before c2;
  • in EE3 the version of EE2 was completed with a  raising e2 to e2.

In the main text we give all necessary signs and we add a cautionary  before d2 in bar 102.

Fingering written into FED

No teaching fingering

..

The teaching fingering may demonstrate that Chopin considered marking the 4th finger in bar 97 to be enough – passing the 4th finger over the fifth and then sliding the 1st finger from the black key to the white one – which was not so obvious to other pianists.

Slur form 2nd beat in A (probable interpretation→GE1FEEE)

Dot & slur from 3rd beat in A (possible interpretation) & GE2

..

It is uncertain which articulation for the 2nd crotchet in the bar Chopin envisioned. A small spot over the note could be a staccato dot, and it was reproduced as such in GE2. In this case, the inaccurate beginning of the slur of A should be interpreted as written with flourish, yet concerning only the 3rd crotchet. According to us, it is still possible that the spot constitutes the beginning of the slur, separated from the following part due to ink stoppage. A abounds in defects of this kind, although they generally do not hamper the interpretation of the composer's intention – cf. e.g. 1st mov., bar 216 or 309, 2nd mov., bar 16. (The mentioned spot can be simply a spot and not be related to the notation of the Concerto at all). In the main text we give a slur from the 2nd crotchet due to:

  • analogy with bar 97,
  • a potential Chopin proofreading of the slur in GE1 (→FEEE), which seems to be indicated by certain minor printing defects around this slur.

b. 101

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

..

It is uncertain whether the 2nd crotchet in the L.H. in A is provided with a staccato dot or not. In GE1 (→FEEE) there is no dot; however, it was added in GE2.
