Issues : No pedal release mark

Only  in GE

As 2 bars before, Chopin did not mark the pedalling in AI, which does not have to mean that he did not want the pedal to be used. The absence of  in GE probably resulted from an oversight.

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

No marking in A1

Our variant suggestion

..

The  mark is included in all editions except for A1. In such contexts, Chopin would often omit that mark at the end of a piece, and the editors would often add it. Therefore, we assume that the  asterisk may be inauthentic and we suggest a variant solution in the main text.

The missing  mark in bar 114 may be a mistake, since it is the last bar on a page in FE, which favours such inaccuracies. On the other hand, from the harmonic point of view, change of pedal is superfluous in this place, hence it cannot be excluded that it is the  mark at the beginning of bar 115 that was unnecessarily added. In the main text, we leave this issue to the performer's discretion.

No markings in main text

In PE, at the beginning of bar 115, there is a  mark, which is not followed by any pedal markings until the end of the line in bar 118. It is most probably a mistake, partially corrected in GE, in which a  was added under the 3rd crotchet in bar 115. As in bars 113-114, in the main text we omit the pedal markings here – see bars 17-24.

The absence of the  sign in A (→GEFE) can be a mere oversight, related to the transition to a new page in A (from bar 119). It is also possible that Chopin omitted this sign due to the use of the so-called diminuendo pedal (gradual release of pedal) – cf. e.g. the 1st mov., bar 300. The  sign added in EE is almost certainly inauthentic – cf. authentic pedalling in bars 93-94 and 109-110 (and even 85-86). Taking into account the fact that the chord in the discussed bars, being the base of the passage, does not change after two bars, we deem it to be likely that Chopin had in mind a situation in which the sound would die away longer, sustained with pedal, which is expressed by the addition of a  sign suggested by us in bar 120.
