FC - Fontana's copy

Date: (1837)
Title: Quatre Mazurka
Dedication: None

Fontana's copy, prepared on the basis of the lost autograph [A]. After Chopin had introduced changes and complemented it, FC served as the basis for GE1.

Among numerous corrections and additions introduced by Chopin, one can mention:

  • introduction of contrasting dynamic indications  and  in bars 5, 9, 13, 37, 41 and 45;
  • added hairpins in bars 7, 15 and 43, 18, 21, 26 and 28-30;
  • added accents in bars 8, 16, 17, 19, 23;
  • changed slurs, e.g. in bars 8 and 44.

The copyist also committed some mistakes, the most serious of which is the omission of the e1 crotchet at the beginning of bar 7.

The pencil additions, visible in a number of places, are a foreign addition, most probably by the reviser (engraver?) of GE1, since all were included in that edition. They concern mainly accidentals, both necessary and cautionary, e.g. in this Mazurka a  to c2 in bars 9 and 45 and to the 2nd L.H. crotchet in bar 43 (A-a octave). We do not include these accidentals in the text of FC.
