b. 110-122

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

Notation in AsI & A (→GEEE,FESB)

Notation in FE

..

The notation of FE, with the demisemiquaver going beyond the 3rd note of the semiquaver triplet (in b. 110, 120 and 122), is contrary to the Chopinesque understanding of this kind of combination of a dotted rhythm with a triplet – see the note on b. 45-46.

b. 110-122

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

In AsI the first variation is written as a draft, without almost any indications or performance markings except the wedge in b. 114 and two L.H. slurs in b. 114-115. We do not comment on the lack of particular markings further on.

in A

 in GE (→FE,EE,FESB)

..

The letter 'z' in the  marking was omitted in the first editions of Chopin's works several times – cf., e.g. the Etude in C minor, Op. 10 No. 4, b. 1.
The erasure visible in A suggests that Chopin initially wrote there a , which, in turn, indicates that there is a difference in meaning between  and ; however, it is unclear what the difference actually is. According to us, it is likely that  could be associated with an isolated or a target accent, after which the current course is not continued anymore. On the other hand, , applied in the Variations much more often and always accompanied by an accent, usually long, or a  hairpin, generally implements the appoggiatura dynamic scheme – it emphasises the first out of the pair of the concerned notes.

Repeat sign in AsI

No repeat in A (→GEFE,EE,FESB)

..

The version of AsI, in which it is also the second part of this variation that was repeated, b. 112-127 (in b. 112 the repeat sign is marked only with an additional double bar line; its meaning becomes clear in b. 127, with two volte), was initially also in A, which can be determined on the basis of the visible corrections – to the right of the double bar line following b. 111, one can see traces of erasure of 4 dots, which, together with that line, constituted a repeat sign. In A, a respective deletion is also at the end of this part, where the 1st volta of b. 127 was deleted.

b. 111

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

In the chord on the 2nd quaver in the bar (in both volte), in AsI and A the second note from the top was initially an e1. Chopin changed it to f1 both in AsI (only the first appearance) and A (both appearances, the initial notes were erased).
