In AsI Var. I is written as a draft, without almost any performance markings. In the discussed bars, the exception is the metronome marking provided at the beginning, =76. We do not comment on the lack of particular markings further on. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Metronome tempos |

The engraver of GE (→FE,EE,FESB) placed the hairpin under the cresc. indication, which may suggest that it concerns the L.H. part. It must be an arbitrary change, hence in the main text we keep the notation of A. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in GE |

The notation of FE, with the demisemiquaver going beyond the 3rd note of the semiquaver triplet (in b. 104 and 106-108), is contrary to the Chopinesque understanding of this kind of combination of a dotted rhythm with a triplet – see the note on b. 45-46. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Dotted rhythms and triplets , FE revisions |

The fingering added in GE2 (→FESB), whose authenticity is, after all, questionable, must be erroneous in this case. However, it is uncertain whether the mistake consisted in printing a wrong digit (2 instead of 4) or in switching the order of digits (2-1 instead of 1-2). GE3 applied the latter. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in GE , GE revisions |

In the majority of the sources there is no accidental to the 8th semiquaver in b. 104 and 108. Admittedly, any doubt is dispelled by the following f3 semiquaver, but the absence of the restoring f3 after f2 at the beginning of the bar must be considered a mistake due to the rule (frequently applied in the sources of the Variations) according to which accidentals are valid at a given pitch regardless of the use of an octave sign – cf., e.g. b. 35, 39 or 335. Therefore, we add them both in the main text and in the content transcriptions of the sources (versions "edited text"). Naturals were also added in GE3. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Accidentals in different octaves , Omissions to cancel alteration , GE revisions , Errors repeated in GE , Errors repeated in FE , Errors repeated in EE |
