b. 77

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

Crotchet & quaver g2 in AsI

Extended crotchet & semiquaver in remaining sources

..

As was the case with b. 69, in the majority of the sources (except FESB) the syncopated g2 crotchet is prolonged with two dots, which leads to an excess of rhythmic values – 5 quavers in the bar. The mistake was noticed and corrected (awkwardly in terms of graphics) only in FESB.

b. 79

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

No repetition in AsI & GE (→FE,EE,FESB)

Repeat in A

..

It is difficult to assume that the removal of the repeat sign for b. 79-95 was not consulted with Chopin. However, the issue is generally obscure, since A is the only source in which the repeat sign was marked – it is absent both in AsI and in the orchestral material GEorch (→FEorch). Therefore, if the repeat signs are not a mistake, at some point Chopin considered expanding the Theme by 16 bars to eventually, after having sent A to the publisher, return to the initial concept.

b. 80-84

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

In the sources there are no naturals specifying the sound of the top note of the mordents. However, the phrase is clearly kept in the key of F major, which is indicated by the arrangement of the individual chords within the four-bar section. The fact that it is also here that Chopin heard the key of F major and not of B major is proven by the e2 notes present in the figuration in b. 112-113 (116-117), particularly in the melody by the end of b. 188. Omission of accidentals specifying the sound of secondary mordent, trill or grupetto notes was rather a rule than an exception in the Chopinesque notation.

b. 83

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

Slur over demisemiquavers in AsI

Slur over motif in A (→GEFE,EE,FESB)

..

The sporadic slurs of AsI – in the entire Theme Chopin wrote only 3 slurs, which are also the only performance indications – are clearly of an accidental nature and cannot be treated in the same way as the slurs of A.

In the main text we add a cautionary  to e2. In AsI Chopin wrote a  to e1 in the L.H. part.
