GE1 - First German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: XI 1847
Plate number: 7714
Title: Trois Mazourkas
Dedication: Madame la Comtesse Laure Czosnowska

First German edition, based on a proof copy of FE1. It is evidenced, for example, by the presence of a quaver stem next to b in bar 24, which had been removed from FE1 before it was published. GE1 bears traces of editorial revision (see characterisation of GE1 in Mazurka in B No. 1); however, nothing indicates that Chopin could have participated in its preparation.

As GE1 was based on a version of FE1 prior to the Chopinesque corrections, it contains a number of earlier versions of the text:

  • it does not include any of the corrections of FE2 mentioned in the characteristics of this edition,
  • it does not include any additions or changes introduced in the latest-phase corrections of FE1 mentioned in the characteristics of this edition.
  • in aforementioned bar 24 there is a b quaver instead of the later crotchet,
  • no sotto voce in bar 33 – it could have been an oversight by the engraver; however, a later Chopinesque correction is equally likely;
  • the absence of a mordent in bar 36 is most probably an oversight, although one cannot rule out that it was added in the last stage of proofreading FE1;
  • the absence of c1 in the L.H. chords in bar 57 is probably an oversight by the engraver of FE, repeated by GE and detected by Chopin during the proofreading, which we describe under the link,
  • in bar 75 on the 3rd beat the  restoring f is missing – it must have been added only just in the last stage of proofreading FE1, which is evidenced by the lack of space for it in that edition,
  • the absence of a slur in bars 75-76 could have been an oversight, although it is also likely that a slur was added in FE1 as a result of a later correction.

In GE1 a number of apt revisions was performed correcting minor inaccuracies or errors:

  • the superfluous  to d in bar 24 was removed,
  • the notation of the rhythm in bars 34 and 38 was clarified by adding rests under the e-a minims,
  • the slur in bars 38-39, written imprecisely in FE1, was shifted,
  • a crotchet rest was added in bar 42,
  •  raising f1 to f1 in a L.H. chord in bar 62 was added,
  • a continuation of the slur in bar 66 was added, considering its absence in FE1 an oversight;
  • a crotchet rest was added, filling the 1st beat of bar 66 in the bottom R.H. voice,
  • the patent mistake in the theme melody in bar 69 was corrected by changing f1 to g1,
  • a fermata in the L.H. part was added in bar 74.

Only the addition of rests filling the rhythm in polyphonic notation in bars 34, 38, 42 and 66 can be considered unnecessary pedantry, because Chopin's notation, although simplified, does not cause any ambiguity.

However, a few mistakes were also committed:

  • the pedal release marks in bars 3-4 were overlooked,
  • the  mark in bar 17 was overlooked,
  • two slurs in bars 22-23 were overlooked,
  • the accidental restoring d2 in bar 49 was overlooked,
  • in bar 63g-g1 octave was written instead of the g-c1-e1 chord.
