EEW is based on FE2. It was not corrected by Chopin, but bears traces of editorial revision:
- in bars 28-29, the unclear notation of the slur in FE2 was considered to be an omission of the continuation of the slur after the change of the line,
- in bars 34-38, an unsuccessful attempt was made to clarify the voice-leading in the L.H.,
- the unclear notation of the slur in the L.H. in FE2 was clarified in bars 38-39,
- in bar 49, the lower notes of the L.H. chords were separated from remaining ones, written on the upper staff,
- a cautionary was added at B in bar 60,
- a raising f1 to f1 was added in the L.H chord in bar 62 – which was not noticed in FE2,
- the omission in bar 62 in FE was considered an error and was placed after the 2nd measure; also added in bar 65,
- a cautionary was added to the L.H. f in bar 63,
- the notation used in FE (→GE) which was already becoming obsolete, regarding the extension of notes at the turn of bars 67-68 and 69-70 was replaced with the modern one (with sustaining slurs),
- pedaling was added in bars 72-74,
- a pause was added in the L.H. part in bar 74.
Some of these revisions were certainly necessary, although some solutions are, in the editors' opinion, inapt, e.g. the location of the pedal markings in bars 72-74 or the change in bar 49.
There are a few errors and imperfections in this edition:
- was placed after the 3rd beat of bars 8 and 12 (instead of before it as in FE),
- a slur was omitted at the beginning of bar 24 – although it could also have been a revision,
- was overlooked in bar 23,
- in bar 27, the continuation of the slur was omitted in the new line,
- a lowering g1 to g1 in bar 49 was omitted – although it could also have been a revision.
The copy of EEW presented in mUltimate Chopin appeared on the market in late 1851, as indicated by the content of its serial title page.* There are copies – probably earlier – with an incomplete plate number (W. & Co, No. ).
