Slurs
b. 35-36

composition: Op. 63 No. 1, Mazurka in B major

The longer AI slur is an element of a different slurring concept (from the one in the published version) of this entire section (bars 53-68). In the main text we honour Chopin's later decision, contained in FE (→GE,EE). category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations |

The four-bar slur of AI is an element of an earlier slurring concept of this entire section (bars 53-68), different from the one in FE (→GE,EE). To the main text we adopt the latter. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations |

b. 49-56

composition: Op. 63 No. 1, Mazurka in B major
..
The eight-bar slur of AI is an element of an earlier concept of slurring of this section – see bars 35-36. In the main text we give the proofread version of FE2 (→EE), in which Chopin combined elements of both concepts by adding a four-bar slur over bars 53-56. He introduced an analogous change into bars 57-60 as well. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations |

Six one-bar slurs in these bars probably replaced the longer slurs present in AI – see the notes on bars 49-56 and 57-60. However, while proofreading FE2 Chopin restored here longer slurs, almost of the same range as in AI. It makes us doubt whether it was supposed to be an addition to the already printed slurs or whether the composer actually wanted to return to the initial concept, and the fact that the shorter slurs remained unchanged resulted from the engraver not having implemented the more labour-consuming part of proofreading (removing an element was much more troublesome than adding an element, considering the then used print method). As we are uncertain as to Chopin's intention, in the main text we give short slurs in brackets, leaving the decision of whether to include them or not to the performer. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions; Corrections & alterations issues: Inaccuracies in FE , Chopin's hesitations , Authentic corrections of FE |

As part of the change of the general concept of slurring of the middle section of the Mazurka (see the note on bars 35-36), Chopin replaced the four-bar slur of AI with 3 shorter slurs while preparing the piece for print. There is a similar situation in bars 57-60 and 61-64. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations |
