CXI - Copy of earlier version

Date: 4 XI 1850
Title: Prélude de Chopin
Dedication: None

Copy by unknown copyist which may carry the earlier version of the prelude’s character and tempo description – Lento misterioso – noted, e.g., in some lost autograph intended for a gift, [Ao]. This possibility is indicated by the fact that Lento was also initially marked on A, then crossed out and replaced by AndantinoCXI is written in a fairly unskilled hand, as a result of which it is not always certain whether some deviations from the published version correspond to the notation of the basis (perhaps authentic) or whether they result from lack of expertise or inaccuracy of the copyist, e.g. pedalling in b. 5-6 and analog.

Under the text of the Prelude, one can see the following pieces of information, written down most probably by the person who received this manuscript as a gift:

  • Dernière composition de Chopin – [last composition by Chopin]. This clearly false statement means that the owner of CXI was misinformed or wanted to misinform someone.
  • Reçu de Lady Clementina Villiers – [received from Lady...]. The aforementioned person is most probably Lady Clementina Augusta Wellington Ramsay-Carmichael, nee Child-Villiers (1824-1858), daughter of the 5th earl of Jersey.
  • Paris le 4 9re(?) 1850 – [Paris, 4 November 1850]. The digit marking the day was corrected from 3 to 4; it is difficult to decipher the word (abbreviation?) determining the month.
