GE2 - Second German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: VIII 1863
Title: Mazurkas || Quatre Mazurkas. | No. 3.
Dedication: None

The second German edition was prepared in two versions: as a volume containing the entire Opus 24, and as four separate Mazurkas published individually. A comparison with the version of GE1 reveals a number of changes and additions introduced to GE2, most of which resulted from a more detailed and meticulous reading of A (e.g. in bar 2 or 12); some changes were introduced to make the notation of similar fragments uniform (e.g. the R.H. in bar 36, 1st volta). There are also some completely arbitrary additions, such as for instance L.H. slurs in  bars 12-18.

One's attention is drawn to the position of asterisk marks , which were placed - unlike in GE1 – after the 3rd crotchet of the bar or a relevant rest. Still, in most situations the shift is so subtle that defining the relation of the asterisk mark to a given note or rest is difficult (e,g, in bars 26 and 35), and sometimes it even seems that the asterisk was simply printed inaccurately (bars 4-5 and 8-9).

We show the Mazurka in the version published separately. Due to the fact that an individual title page was replaced with a collective one listing all the Mazurkas, the dedication was omitted in that version of GE2. Pencil additions that can be seen in the presented copy have no source value.

GE3. Beginning from 1868, subsequent impressions of GE2 were published, with a number of changes introduced to the remaining three Mazurkas of that opus. GE3 is only known in the version containing the entire opus; corrections may have been introduced to the Mazurkas published individually. As no changes were introduced to the musical text of the Mazurka in A flat major, we do not treat GE3 as a separate source for that Mazurka. Photos of the pages with the Mazurka in A flat major in the copy of GE3 can be viewed as final pages of the Mazurka in C major
