FE2 - Second French edition

Publisher: Maurice Schlesinger
Date: 4 XII 1842
Title: Mazurka
Dedication: None

FE2 was being prepared with a piano music album by miscellaneous composers in mind called Keepsake des Pianistes. Such albums were offered as a Christmas/New Year gift to the subscribers of the weekly Revue et Gazette Musicale de Paris issued by Schlesinger. The album from 1842 featuring the Mazurka in G Major was the second one. In that version, the Mazurka is only three pages long and devoid of the plate number.

FE2 is based on FE1, which is proven by their common mistakes, e.g. almost all (except b. 8-9) mentioned in the characterization of FE1, and was almost certainly sketchily proofread by Chopin. It is proven by, e.g.:

  • the correction of the slurring in b. 3-4,
  • an arpeggio added before the 2nd chord in b. 4,
  • the bass minim moved an octave lower in b. 78.

FE2 was not prepared with utmost care, since it contains a significant number of oversights; below are some examples:

The presented copy reveals a number of technical printing defects, np. darkening – partial or total – of the minim heads, as a result of which some of them resemble crotchets (slightly too big). This is clearly seen in, e.g. b. 53, 54 or 64.
